Welcome to Exchange
Books & Magazines!
We are a website aimed
at connecting people who love to read and who love
the environment.
We are a non-profit
organization currently staffed by 2 volunteers
Why did we want to create
this network? (You can read more in the "About
Us" page)
The paper industry is
one of the greatest energy consumers and one of the
largest water polluters in the world. In the U.S.,
we consume at least 200 billion pounds of paper per
year, and the consumption continues to grow
annually. In addition, paper production is one of
the primary reasons our forests are being cleared at
a fast pace.
We believe that in
order to reduce the impact on environmental
degradation, we need to reduce our level of
consumption.
Exchanging books and
magazines rather than buying and subscribing new
ones is one way of reducing the consumption of
paper.
There are already
websites offering member services in book exchange,
however we didn't see one that offered magazine
exchange, and we saw a need that could be filled.
Magazine publications in fact consume more paper
than book publications, because magazines are issued
weekly to monthly, and unlike books, once read, they
are rarely kept and often tossed into recycling (at
least, we hope!).
Paper recycling is
great and uses less energy compared to the creation
of new paper products, but still, it does use
energy. In the slogan of "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle",
our focus is on reducing and reusing.
Our service is created to
network people who feel the same way, who love to read,
and who would love to exchange magazines and books with
each other rather than subscribe and buy new ones.
